5 TIPS FOR HOUSE HUNTING NEAR PAPAGO PARK, Scottsdale, Arizona:

Whether you're single or married with kids, Papago Park is the perfect place to spend your afternoon. Younger kids can enjoy the easy-to-tread interpretive nature trail while those more experienced can explore an 825-foot trail up to the fabulous butte, known simply as Hole-in-the-Rock. The Phoenix-area park also houses the Desert Botanical Garden, the Phoenix Zoo and acres of wide-open desert. To pick a nearby home, here's what you need to consider to help ensure your new home is as comfortable as possible:

Air Conditioning

Valley temperatures are certainly not shy about soaring above 100 degrees. Even though the lack of humidity can make the high temps more comfortably than living in Nebraska, humidity does come with the monsoon season—summer. At the very least, a house equipped with a central swamp cooler is a must to circulate air throughout your home. For optimum comfort, go for a home with a central air conditioning unit.

Consider a New Car

Your car may have chugged on for years in your current location, but not every vehicle is a master at taking on the desert heat and landscape. To escape the heat while you drive around town, air conditioning for your car is a must. You should also opt for a car lighter in color—white, champagne or tan won't absorb as much heat, unlike a black or dark blue colored car. They Valley is abundant with car dealerships. Scottsdale Hyundai is located right next door to the park.

Don't Expect to Stay Indoors

If you're going to move near Papago Park only to stay huddled in your home, you're going to miss out! Papago Park boasts hiking and bicycle tails, a playground and golf course and a wide expanse of desert that comes complete with lagoons and streams. You can even go fishing for trout or largemouth bass. All these outdoor activities may mean you'll want to consider a home with a large garage or laundry room to store all your new outdoor gear.

Prepare Yourself for Desert Weather

Get rid of all the heavy duty, snow-related clothing and gear you will no longer need at your new digs near Papago Park. Avid skiers, however, may want to hang on to their skis. The city of Flagstaff is about a two-hour drive from Phoenix and offers cool weather and snowy mountains. With over 300 sunny days a year in Phoenix, you will need to pack or purchase sun hats, sunglasses, sun screen and opt for a home with sunscreens on all window.

Get Used to Desert critters

You'll find a wide array of animals at the Phoenix Zoo in Papago Park, but they're not the ones you necessarily have to be ready to encounter. The desert landscape is brimming with critters that range from javelinas to hummingbirds with tarantulas in between. Part of your preparation should be learning how to live in harmony with them all, with tips available from the park center.

It is not uncommon for snakes, lizards, scorpions and coyotes to make their way into neighborhoods or yards near the wide-open parkland. Be wary while gardening, enroll your dogs in snake avoidance training and teach your kids to refrain from playing with anything that sports a stinger or a rattle.
